Ruidoso Downs sits at 6,420 ft. above sea level, straddles US Highway 70, and has the Rio Ruidoso meander lazily through the town while surrounded by thousands of acres of Lincoln National Forest on either side. With a growing  population approaching 3,000 Ruidoso Downs has an intriguing combination of urban and rural scenery. There are neighborhoods and working ranches, trailer parks and new homes, parks and of course, Walmart.

To the south, it is a steep climb up and over to the Mescalero Apache Reservation. To the North it is rolling hills and smaller trees. Ruidoso Downs is also proud home to the Hubbard Museum of the American West and of course, Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Billy the Kid Casino, two of the area’s biggest draws.
